Spelt Out

(Esopus Magazine Compilation, Summer 2006)

All the crying doggies in the evening sun
Running through the afternoon
Looking through your windows
Your letters and lines
Do I have to spell it out for you?
Everybody told me there was nothing wrong
But I don’t really think that’s true
I feel it in my fingers, my fingertip bones
I’m feeling something coming through
I don’t wanna tell you what’s been on my mind
I can’t barely look at you
Every time we’re talking I’m seeing the signs
I wanna leave the room
And every broken whisper that i ever heard
Every ghost I ever knew
Everything you’re saying, every word
I’m feeling something coming through
And my eyes close
And my hands can just follow
And you’ll spell it out for me
And all the busted remnants of the afternoon
Running through the evening light
Looking through your window
Becoming a tomb
Fingers will contract the night
And I don’t wanna talk about what’s on my mind
I just wanna hang it up
Looking through your window

Another Way

The stars are stuck so deep in separate sections of the sky
But still they always have a place
Your eyes twitch at twenty-five
Your hands get cold in wintertime
And lines form on your face
And we were there to find another way
We were there to find another way
Gently ruminate on galaxies, the Milky Way
And discuss outer space until there was nothing left to say
And start another day beneath the stars
Two human lungs the size of a bedroom inside your mind
Make up the markings of your day
Some new thing to think about
New words for you to shout before you throw them away
And I was there to find a better way
I was there to find another way
Start another day across the universal play
Figure out my name before I went away
And there was nothing left to do
But sit so still beneath the stars
And remember that who we are
Is not made up of flesh and bone
Where we live or telephones
Convenience stores or postal codes
Candy bars or ice cream cones
Kit Kats, Mars or Toblerones
Or what we want or what we own
Or everything we think we’re owed
But just some sort of moments in the maze.

More

The ring on your hand
The sterilized sunlight
The clouds above the town
Confines and demands
The way we waste our nights
The place we went to drown
Where did you go?
“I went to find more.”
Why did you come back?
“I don’t know.”
You should know by now.
“I don’t think I can.”
Hound.

Coke Can In Peach Orchard

Like a can of Coca Cola in an orchard full of peaches
Stretch the truth around a lie just to see how far it reaches
All those boxes in the basement aren’t going anywhere
I was stealing cigarettes, saving money for the weekend
You were talking about regrets but I couldn’t hear you speaking
Video games in your head weren’t gonna let you out
And you don’t know now.
